Özgür Gökdeniz
My name is Özgür, which means “Free” in Turkish—a name that has come to define my journey from the rigid structures of authority to the liberating rhythms of the earth. For 25 years, I served as a police officer in Ankara, training in martial arts, law, and justice. However, witnessing the complexities of a changing political landscape led me to a profound realization: true justice and peace are found in nurturing life, not controlling it.
In 2017, I made a life-altering decision. I handed in my badge, left the city, and returned to my ancestral roots in Western Turkey. I traded the sirens of the capital for the morning call of the rooster and the wind in the olive groves. Today, I am an organic farmer, a student of nature, and the founder of a growing “Life School” on our family farm.
Experience & Philosophy
Over the past 9 years, I have transformed our land into a sanctuary of biodiversity and sustainable living. My philosophy is rooted in the traditional Anatolian “Huzur” (Peace). I believe in:
Radical Hospitality: Having hosted over 153 guests and volunteers from 32 different countries, I treat everyone as a family member. Our farm is a safe space where diversity is celebrated regardless of nationality, religion, or gender.
Ancestral Self-Sufficiency: From sourdough bread and artisanal cheese to traditional wool rug weaving, I practice and teach the skills that allow us to live independently from industrial systems.
Resilience & Integrity: My journey taught me that “haste is the work of Satan.” I work with care, patience, and a deep respect for the “mental load” and emotional sensitivity required to maintain a harmonious community.
Skills I Share
Participants in my retreats don’t just observe; they immerse themselves in:
Organic Agriculture & Permaculture: Seed-to-table gardening and seasonal harvesting.
Animal Husbandry: Mindful care for our goats, cows, and chickens.
Traditional Food Preservation: The ancient arts of making tarhana, vinegar, and preserves.
Dystopian Literature & Philosophy: A voracious reader, I often share insights from my favorite works like 1984, connecting the wisdom of literature to our modern struggle for freedom.
On our farm, we live by a simple truth: “When we have food, we have everything.” I invite you to join me under the walnut trees to feel the real connection with Mother Nature, share a meal, and rediscover what it means to be truly free.
